You know you need a resume is an absolute necessity in order to apply for jobs. Determining what exactly should be showcased on your resume is a different story. Manpower offers a list of key components that should be included in your resume.

For every position you have held, include the following:

  • Company name
  • Time period you worked there
  • Your job title
  • Your skills, duties and responsibilities (tip: incorporate keywords from the job listing)
  • Accomplishments: examples include new methodologies introduced to the company and practices that you implemented that lead to increased productivity and better results.
  • Qualifications and technical skills

Keep the job listing in mind when writing and/or revising your resume. Incorporate details they want to see:

  • Specific skills for a specific job — does your resume indicate that you are qualified for the position you're applying for?
  • Specific levels of work experience. List experience in terms of number of years.
  • Reliability. Make it easy for employers to see your work history is consistent by including time periods for each position you've had.
  • Leadership and initiative — List leadership roles, examples of initiative, and times where you've trained others

Know your resume inside and out. Employers will use your resume as a basis and starting point during your interview. Be prepared to elaborate on certain skills, experiences and achievements listed in your resume.
